The Brethren of the Coast or the Brethren, was a loose coalition of pirates and privateers also known as Buccaneers who operated during the 1600s and 1700s in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico and also in the Atlantic Ocean. They were a syndicate of pirate captains with letters of marque and reprisal who regulated their privateering enterprises within the community of privateers.

 In 1974 the greatest rugby union side ever to leave the British Isles took on the mighty Springboks in a gruelling 22 match series, including four test matches. By the end, each member of that historic team had entered British Rugby folklore. Several of the victorious side from the 1971 tour of New Zealand united once again and accomplished a remarkable unbeaten record of 21 consecutive victories and a draw in the final test, however, many commentators feel that a perfect record was denied due to poor refereeing. Individual performances, which caught the headlines, included the magnificent half-back pairing of Phil Bennett and Gareth Edwards. JJ Williams completed two brilliant tries during the third test and finished with an impressive 112 tour tries in total. Roger Uttleys appearance in no less than 16 of the 22 games was a formidable achievement and JPR Williams, possibly the greatest ever full back, would have won the final test with a magnificent run to set up Fergus Slatterys try only for it to be dubiously disallowed. Scotlands Ian McGeechan demonstrated superb agility and pace in the centre whilst fellow country man, Andy Irvine, produced countless moments of sublime skill in the final two tests and will always be remembered as one of the most gifted players ever to don a Lions shirt. The Lions tremendous forward line led by inspirational Captain Willie John McBride was in many respects the driving force behind the success of the 1974 tour. McBrides courage and leadership singled him out above all others, as this was to be his fifth and final Lions tour. McBrides Lions career spanned a remarkable 12 years and 17 tests, a record, which may never be surpassed. The other forwards including Cotton, McLauchlan, Gordon Brown, Windsor, Slattery and Mervyn Davies combined effectively to set up a strong platform for victory and proved to be stalwarts in both attack and defence. Everyone returned from the 1974 tour a hero and it would be fair to say that this unparalleled squad is still a benchmark to which each and every successive Lions team since 1974 have strived to emulate.

This Week's Half Price Military Art

Operation AGRICOLA.  On 12th June 1999, 5 Airborne Brigade spearheaded the KFOR advance into Kosovo by securing the Kacanik Defile ahead of the ground forces.  The Brigade's joint airmobile operation with the UK support helicopter force followed a rapid strategic insertion to theatre.  The painting, commissioned by HQ 5 Airborne Brigade, depicts a composite scene, albeit an accurate interpretation, toward the northern end of the defile early on 12th June.  From the left, a Pathfinder patrol; a Medium Machine Gun team from 1 PARA; a reconnaissance section (in Land Rovers) from 1st Bn Royal Gurkha Rifles; a 3 PARA tom; a mine clearance team from 9 Para Squadron Royal Engineers; 216 Para Signal Squadron TACSAT; with Brigade HQ command group in their rear.  Above are Chinooks from 18 & 27 Squadrons RAF, with a Puma from 33 Squadron RAF on the bridge, with Apache helicopters of the US Army providing flank protection.  The painting is representative of the combined, joint, all-arms grouping of 5 Airborne Brigade on the day.

After the fall of the stronghold of Alesia in 52BC, Vercingetorix was the last Gallic Chieftain to submit to Caesar.  Vercingetorix is shown arrivng on horseback at the gate of the Roamn fort, with Caesar shown a distance away in the fort. Henri Motte studied under Jean-Leon Gerome, and most of his works were shown at the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris. His major works were of historical pieces such as this one and Hannibal Crossing the Rhone, both of these receiving a bronze medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He was awarded Chevalier de la Legion dHonneur in 1892.

 With Edward I absent from Scotland the land soon slips once more into open insurrection. Though not of noble birth, William Wallace, by brutally slaying the Sheriff of Lanark in vengeance for the murder of Wallaces new bride and her servants, soon comes to embody the Scottish Nationalist cause. Through his popularity and military skill, he is able to rapidly unify the rebellious bands into a single, cohesive fighting force. An English army is sent north to defeat the Scots and capture Wallace and the only noble to come to Wallaces assistance, is his friend Andrew Murray. Other Scottish landowners are too timid and fear the consequences.  The armies meet at Stirling and the English begin to deploy across the narrow wooden bridge which spans the River Forth. Whilst the English commanders bicker about their battle plan, Wallace seizes the moment and blows his horn. Upon this signal, the massed ranks of Scottish spearmen charge forward across the open boggy ground towards the bridge!

 With his personal emblem of black and white fuselage band adorning his Fokker E.V, 153/18, Richard Wenzl briefly commanded Jasta 6, based at Bernes in August 1918, and claimed a modest 6 victories during his career with JG 1. The Fokker E.V was both fast and manoeuvrable, but a series of engine and structural failures meant that these exciting new machines saw only brief service before being re-worked to emerge as the D.VIII, sadly too late to make any impression on the war. Wenzl is shown here in combat with Sopwith Camels of 203 Sqn, assisted by Fokker D.VIIs, which served alongside the E.Vs of Jasta 6. The D.VII shown is that of Ltn d R Erich Just of Jasta 11, also based at Bernes.

 Designed the brothers Henri and Maurice Farman, the F.40 embodied many of the features of contemporary designs comprising a crew nacelle with pusher propeller and a tail supported by narrow booms and struts. Forty French squadrons were equipped with the type which first entered service in 1915 but, just one year later, they were being withdrawn as rapid developments in fighter design rendered them obsolete. One such example is shown here having surprised a single-seat Taube observation aircraft, which is spotting above some abandoned trenches near a crashed Albatros C.III. The F.40s prominent position for the gunner / observer was one of its qualities and, it is said, inspired the German AGO company when designing their C.1.
