 Lance Corporal Mel Townsend, 22 SAS, in action in Dhofar, 6th January, 1975, for which he was awarded the DCM.  Mel Townsend, of the Royal Corps of Signals, was a member of a squadron of the 22nd SAS Regiment controlling Arab Irregulars in support of the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces in Dhofar from September 1974 to January 1975.  He was the leader of a four man SAS liaison patrol attached to a company of the Sultan's Armed Forces in a battalion operation against guerrilla forces on 6th January 1975.  His company was demoralised after coming under heavy enemy fire and Mel noticed that very little fire was being returned.  He ran forward with two other men and began returning fire.  He then encouraged the Arab soldiers to fire their weapons and inspired them to do so by his personal example.  His initiative saved the day.  He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his <i>inspiring example of the highest gallantry and military ability.</i>

Captain W Macleods Company, 1st Battalion Royal Artillery. Battle of Quebec 13th September 1759 was Wolfs final attempt to take the city. His army scaled the cliffs from Wolfes cove and fought the French army which was larger than Wolfes on the Plains of Abraham. During this battle General Wolfe was hit twice  and eventually mortally wounded when a bullet passed through his lungs. As he lay dying he heard someone shout They run - see how they run. Wolfe gave his last order to cut of the enemies retreat and his last words being Now God be praised. I will die in peace.

 The 2002 Grand Prix season started with much excitement as for the first few races the major teams sparred for supremacy. Just when it looked as if there would be a three-way fight between Ferrari, Williams and McLaren, along came Michael Schumacher in the 2002 Ferrari and showed the supremacy of the driver and machine package. However, against all odds and demonstrating supreme confidence and skill on a track where top speed was not all important, David Coulthard made one of the best drives of his career. Pulling out all the stops lie grabbed second spot on the grid. For once on race day he was not to be easily pushed aside and from the sprint to the first corner, he managed to grab first place and though pressed throughout the race, gave no quarter. In a supreme demonstration reminiscent of Senna and Mansell years ago, he made his car so wide that no-one could pass, and went on to take a memorable and well-deserved victory. Our picture shows him at Lowes Hairpin with the Williarris and Ferraris waiting to pounce at the slightest mistake - which did not happen.

This Week's Half Price Aviation Art

 Based upon the design of an earlier 1913 racing biplane, Aviatik AG were able to introduce their B.1 into military service almost at the outbreak of World War 1, the type proving to be a useful reconnaissance machine during the early stages of the conflict. As with most B type aircraft of this time, the Aviatik B.1 was unarmed and carried an observer in the forward cockpit. Power was provided by a Mercedes D.1 inline engine whose large radiators were fitted to the port side of the fuselage, just above the lower wing. There is no record of exactly how many B.1s were constructed.

Hawker Hurricanes of 249 squadron (RAF) departing off HMS Ark Royal in June 1941 as par tof Force H. The Hurricanes were to become part of the Defence of Malta against the onslought and non stop bombing by the Axis Bombers and HMS Ark Royal would be sunk only a few months later when on the 13th November 1941 HMS Ark Royal was hit by a single torpedo from the German U-boat U81. The torpedo hit  on the starboard side near the starboard boiler room causing a 130ft by 30ft hole. Water poured in causing a 10% list immediately. The flooding spread quickly to the middle of the ship and then to the port boiler room, eectric power failed,  and after 14 hours while in tow to Gibraltar she capsized and sunk the following day.
