Bloodied But Unbeaten (The Battle for the Dunkard Church During the Battle of Sharpsburg, September by Chris Collingwood.

Bloodied But Unbeaten (The Battle for the Dunkard Church During the Battle of Sharpsburg, September by Chris Collingwood.

Described as the Deathknell of the Confederacy - Sharpsburg (Antietam to the North) was a savage bloodletting for both sides. It was said to be the bloodiest day of the American Civil War. In the painting, below the Dunkard church confederate General John Bell Hoods Texas Division - or what was left of it- stand in line of battle. In the distance Union Major General John Sedgwicks division can be seen advancing on the rebel lines. During the ghastly four hour struggle the Confederates managed to hold and then repel the bloodied remnants of Sedgwicks division back to the east woods and at about 10.30am, the carnage around the Dunkard church had ended. Eventually though, the Confederate forces were in retreat, loosing Sharpsburg to the Union but prepared to fight on for two and a half more years, bloodied but unbeaten.

This Week's Half Price Art

Dawn. British artillery thundered, and the territorial soldiers 15th Scottish division stormed towards the German trenches defending the coal mining village of Loos. The gas cloud that preceded the Highland advance was pendulous and largely stationary due to a distinct lack of wind, and ,upon emerging from the smudgy gas, the highlanders were pelted with machine gun fire and shrapnel from the defending German batteries. Not to be denied, the Scots gritted their teeth, and with an officer shouting faster boys! give them hell! the highlanders charged straight at the defenses. The Germans, unnerved by the stubborn courage of their kilted opponents, began to fall back through the village of Loos. The Camerons and the Black Watch, shouting their battle cry and charging down the main road of the village, then engaged the defending Germans in a series of savage battles for each and every house - hob-nailed boots, rifle butts, and bayonets being wielded with great enthusiasm by the vengeful Scots. By 8.00am the village was in Scottish hands.

This incident took place on October 23rd,1914. A party of German soldiers had been driven to take shelter in the small house. British artillery then targeted the house, making the situation of the Germans uncomfortable. Under cover of the bombardment, a company of Cameron Highlanders rushed the position, intercepting the Germans as they tried to extricate themselves. After a brief struggle, and being somewhat unnerved by the prompt appearance of the Highlanders; the German group surrendered.

First flown in 1948, the Vickers Viscount was the first turbopop commercial airliner to enter service anywhere in the world. Renowned for its comfort, quietness and large windows, it became one of the most successful and profitable aircraft of the post-war era. British European Airways added a large number of Viscounts to their fleet, starting in April 1953, the type continuing for many decades before being finally withdrawn from BEA's successor, British Airways, in the 1980s. Many examples continued to fly with other airlines and charter companies and several examples are preserved in museums.

One of Frances most venerated pilots in World War 1 was Capitaine Georges Guynemer whose final victory tally has never been fully established, although he has been officially credited with 53 kills. It is more likely, however, that his actual total was nearer to 88! He is shown here in his Spad S.VII having just claimed his 31st victim, a Gotha bomber.
