Guy Harris
| Wing Commander Guy Harris (deceased) Guy Harris was born in 1918 and in March 1936,joined the RAF on a short service commission In July 1938 he was promoted to Flying Officer. When war broke out Harris was with 32 Squadron, moving to 253 squadron on the 10th November 1939 as a flight commander, The new pilots began training in the squadrons Miles Magister's but from December, marginally more appropriate Battle light bombers arrived to give pilots single-engined, retractable undercarriage monoplane experience. Along with the OC and fellow flight commander Harry Anderson, Flt Lts Guy Harris , instructed their inexperienced pilots and In May 1940 his flight was sent to France, and on the 18th Harris claimed 2 victories in two sorties a HS126 and a HE111 bomber which was unconfirmed, on their return and before he could get back into the air his Hurricane along with 5 other Hurricanes were destroyed on the ground whilst being refuelled. He returned to the UK the following day and while attacking a He111 he was wounded from return fire from the bomber. He landed at Dieppe and was evacuated by sea. On 2 November he rejoined the unit on the 2nd of November and on 16th November was posted to 56 OTU as an instructor. Wing Commander Guy Harris passed away in 2007 |
