Carmela Turner | Chief Nursing Officer Carmela Turner RGN SCM Carmela Turner was eighteen when she joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment of nurses in 1939. Based at the Irmarfa. Hospital, she was to see at first hand the terrible effects of the war on both the services and civilians in Malta. She also become a casualty herself when a bomb aimed at the nearby Takah airfield exploded next to the hospital. Although injured, she first went to see that the patients were safe. Later a piece of shrapnel was extracted from her arm and she wears the resultant scar with pride to this day. |
